Pounding. Aching. Throbbing. Pulsating. Gnawing. These are adjectives I hear on a very common basis when meeting with people that are suffering from headaches. There are lots of causes for this kind of pain but one of the more common ones we deal with as chiropractors is the stress version or as we call it cervicogenic variety. This most likely means that the pain is being referred to your head from somewhere in your neck and upper back. Finding the main component of pain whether it is from the soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments) or joints themselves is what we do. Once we figure out what is hurting the next step is to put a plan of action into place to rectify the issues and get you back to living life as pain free as you can.
Here are a couple tips to help yourself and get back to living life to the fullest without your head pounding away.
- Decrease stress- I know this is much easier said than done. Find little things that can limit your exposure to stressors that you can implement on a daily basis. Consistency is key here.
- Practice proper posture- Sit up straight with your head directly over your shoulders. This will give those cervical and upper thoracic muscles a bit of a break.
- Breathing in deeply and fully into your belly will help to stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system which in turn will calm down your sympathetic nervous system.
- Move more, sit less.
- Seek advice/treatment from qualified health care provider.
