Everyone has experienced pain at some point in their lives. One of my major goals when I work with clients is to get them moving better and keep them moving better throughout their lives and pain can be a hindrance on that. It can be a not pleasant experience but a lot of the times it may be your friend indicating that you need to do something more. When I talk to patients here at the office in Medina about pain I use a red, yellow and green light system. Most people are very familiar with this system in their every day life so the knowledge is easily transferred to when dealing with pain.
- Green Light- Pain when you doing the activity but no pain 2, 4, 8, 12 hours after the activity. Your range of motion remains the same as before the activity. This is a sign that you are doing good and are clear to increase the activity 1-10% the next time.
- Yellow Light- Moderate pain when you doing the activity and a moderate increase in pain 24-72 hours after the activity. Your range of motion remains the same as before the activity. This is a sign that the tissue is becoming strained and you may have pushed a little too hard. Rest, ice, use mid-range motion and medication as needed for 24-48 hours or until your symptoms return to where they started.
- Red Light- Severe pain when doing the activity that prevents the activity and pain that can last for weeks. There is also a decrease in range of motion, strength or ability to complete tasks. This requires a visit to your health care provider as you may have suffered an injury.
